This Report documents the research findings, as well as the emerging issues that participants identified as being critical for the future work around a Decent Standard of Living (DSL) in South Africa
Sem títuloThis research presents a Decent Standard of Living (DSL) and a DSL Index (DSLI) for South Africa. It is based on a concept for relative poverty that focuses on the ability of people to achieve a socially determined acceptable standard of living to enable them to participate fully in society.
Sem títuloAs we concentrate national initiatives on Covid-19 recovery, the systemic eradication of poverty must be the greatest priority, or reconstruction will not succeed. This lies at the heart of the Decent Standard of Living research, and other recent national poverty studies. In the Fifth Annual DSL Colloquium 2020, we ask: how will poverty shape our future in SA?
Sem títuloSPII 2020 Annual Report
Sem títuloThis submission is based on the report submitted by SPI to the United Nation’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (UN CESCR) on the implementation of UN CESCR’s recommendation to South Africa on the necessity of adopting a composite index on the cost of living. This submission reflects the agreed position of SPI and CHR on the development of a composite index on the cost of an adequate standard of living by South Africa.
Sem títuloThe UN CESCR Committee published its recommendations in November 2018 on South Africa’s initial report on its implementation of provisions outlined in the ICESCR and made various recommendations. This section of the report focuses on recommendation 47(a).
Sem títuloThe launch of the Decent Standard of Living report marked a significant step towards understanding poverty and inequality’s impact on people’s lives in South Africa. The findings highlighted both positive trends and ongoing challenges in achieving a decent standard of living for all, while the discussions provided insights into the complexities of poverty reduction and policy development.
Sem títuloThese are the following objectives of this analysis :
- To assess the trends of key development indicators to gain a clear trajectory of
progress and growth in South Africa. - To provide a social justice perspective which puts people at the centre of development
and ensures the progressive realisation of their socio-economic entitlements. - To present a pre-COVID-19 baseline analysis. Thus highlighting how the impact of the
pandemic on worsening inequality and public service delivery should drive the
government to be more serious about aligning the post-Covid-19 recovery to the
visions of global and national blueprints for inclusive development.
The overall objective of this analysis is to demonstrate, based on economic analysis, the costs involved in introducing and institutionalising a SADC-wide Basic Income Grant (SADC BIG) that is wholly or predominately funded through the extractive industries to promote economic justice, reduce poverty and inequality and stimulate human and economic integration and development in the region.
Sem títuloThis document is the outcome of the project: Improving Access to the Socio-Economic Right of Housing, which is a joint project of Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute (SPII) and the Open Society Foundation. The project has twin objectives: to pilot the use of desktop research, community based social audits and expert-level social dialogues to produce new methodology to improve people’s access to their socio-economic rights in South Africa and other countries.
