This is a summit where farm workers, farm dwellers, leaders of government, the private sector, organized labour and civil society, led by the President, came together on 30 – 31 July 2010 in Western Cape to discuss the critical need to build good working relations and living conditions for vulnerable workers within the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries sectors. The discussions centered on the social determinants of health; working conditions; tenure security; and empowerment and training for vulnerable workers.

To amend the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, so as to provide that where land and any improvements thereon are expropriated for the purposes of land reform, the amount of compensation payable may be nil; to provide that national legislation must provide circumstances where the amount of compensation is nil; to provide for land to be the common heritage of all citizens that the state must safeguard for future generations; to require that conditions should be fostered to enable state custodianship of certain land in order for citizens to gain access to land on an equitable basis; and to provide for matters connected therewith.

To provide for the establishment of a Land Court and appeals against decisions of the Land Court; to make provision for the administration and judicial functions of the Land Court; to provide for the jurisdiction of the Land Court and Magistrates’ Courts for certain land related matters; to provide for mediation procedures; to amend certain laws relating to the adjudication of land matters by other courts; and to provide for matters connected therewith.

Act enacted to provide for the expropriation of property for a public purpose or in the public interest; to regulate the procedure for the expropriation of property for a public purpose or in the public interest, including payment of compensation; to identify certain instances where the provision of nil compensation may be just and equitable for expropriation in the public interest; to repeal the Expropriation Act, 1975 (Act No. 63 of 1975); and to provide for matters connected therewith

The Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute (SPII) was registered in 2006 due to a growing concern about poverty and inequality in South Africa. SPI’s core mission was to understand the nature and causes of poverty and inequality and to contribute to policy solutions. In 2006 South Africa did not have any measurement of poverty like the national poverty lines we have now, which were introduced in part as a response to SPII’s early work. SPII’s first project focused on understanding poverty through a level of knowledge that is deeper than money-metric poverty lines. This led to the development of the highly successful Decent Standard of Living (DSL) project in which SPII collaborated with various partners, including organised labour, civil society, academia, Social Development, StatsSA, National Treasury, and the Presidency.
